The fetus had gastroschisis, a congenital anomaly which is a defect in the abdominal wall. The intestines extrude through the defect and float freely in the amniotic fluid. As pregnancy progresses, there is the risk that the bowel will twist ("volvulus") or kink, cutting off its own blood supply, leading to gangrene of the intestines. Here, the mother was allowed to go well past her due date, allowing time for the bowel to become gangrenous. A San Bernardino jury returned one of the largest malpractice verdicts in California history.
