Brain Damage to Baby following Ruptured Uterus After VBAC

A mother attempted a vaginal delivery of her second child after having her first baby by Cesarean Section - a vaginal birth after Cesarean ("VBAC"). This was highly recommended by her obstetricians, despite the increased risk of uterine rupture in such cases. During the end stages of labor, the mother's uterus ruptured, causing fetal distress in the baby. The hospital and doctors, despite their claims of being able to handle such a complication expeditiously, took too long to diagnose the problem and mobilize to perform the emergency Cesarean section. Although the baby survived, she was left with severe brain damage, including Cerebral Palsy, spastic quadriplegia and mental retardation
