L. Dean Smith, Jr.

Mr. Smith is an associate with Kussman & Whitehill. Mr. Smith's practice is devoted to the representation of individuals and families related to cases involving wrongful death and catastrophic personal injury arising from claims of medical malpractice, product liability, and bad faith denial of insurance benefits.

Prior to joining Kussman & Whitehill, Mr. Smith was a litigator at a highly-regarded litigation boutique located in downtown Los Angeles representing both corporate and individual clients in federal and state courts. Mr. Smith is experienced in all phases of litigation, and has previously been responsible for managing his own case load. He has made numerous appearances in state and federal court, and has extensive experience in law and motion, including motions for summary judgment and pre-trial motions, taking and defending depositions of key witnesses, and briefing complex procedural and substantive issues for his clients. Mr. Smith is experienced in a variety of areas of complex litigation, including products liability, catastrophic personal injury, clergy sexual abuse, consumer class actions, 17200 representative actions, wrongful termination, race and pregnancy discrimination, professional liability, partnership disputes, breach of contract, and business torts.

Education:

Mr. Smith received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 2006. At Loyola Law School, Mr. Smith was a staff writer for the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review, a member of the Dean's List, and received the First Honor's Award (formerly known as the American Jurisprudence Award) for obtaining the highest grade in Legal Research & Writing. While at Loyola Law School, Mr. Smith was an extern in the Disability Rights Legal Center's Civil Rights Litigation Project, assisting with the prosecution of class action lawsuits on the behalf of persons with disabilities. Mr. Smith also served as a research assistant to Loyola Law School Professor Laurie Levenson, a renowned and leading authority on Criminal Law & Procedure. Mr. Smith is a graduate of California State University Northridge, where he received a B.A. in Liberal Studies.

Professional Activities:

Mr. Smith is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.

Admissions:

Mr. Smith is admitted to practice in all state courts in the State of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
